While it is true that you can start your flea market and swap meet sales business using just a folding table, you will want to build a display that will be effective for both you and your customers. A rummage sale look won't get you too far in the long run. By following a few tips you can build a display that is both attractive to your customers and easy for you to manage.

You will want a display that is well organized. Many of your customers will know exactly what they are looking for and will not want to hunt through piles of irrelevant merchandise to find it. The faster they can find what they are looking for, the higher your sales are going to be.

Organizing not only makes your display more attractive and easier for shoppers, it makes it easy for you to keep track of your merchandise as well. You need to maintain inventory control as well as be able to spot shoplifters quickly. There are a few things you need to consider when setting up an attractive, well organized display.

Use displays that are easy to transport. You may have a lot of small, expensive items that you would like to display in a glass case. Can you transport that glass without breaking it? Perhaps you will need plexi-glass do avoid breakage during transport. Crates can be covered with cloth or vinyl and make pleasing displays while also being convenient for carrying items in transport as well. You can stack crates in many interesting patterns that will make your display more attractive to draw people to your booth. You might want a shelving unit or two for your display. One piece shelving may prove to be hard to transport so you may want to build or buy shelving that is easily and quickly assembled and disassembled and transports easily.

Displays should not only be easy to transport and set up, they need to be strong enough to last. If you are going to hang items from pegs, make sure the board that the pegs are attached to is thick enough that they won't come loose. Plywood makes good backing, but you will want to make sure that it is at least 3/8 inch thick to hold pegs or screws sufficiently. You will also want to be sure that the display is sturdy and weighted enough so it can not tip over, especially if a gusty wind blows on it. If a display blows over, you could lose money through breakage of valuable items.

If a display falls over and injures someone you will be liable. When you build your display, make sure to build it with safety in mind. You do not want your present and future profits going to pay expensive lawyers. Make sure that your booth is set up so that nothing is going to get caught in wind and hit someone, other booths, or vehicles. If you have an awning, make sure that it is weighted well enough to keep it from becoming tipped in a gust of wind. Weights, such as milk jugs filled with sand or steel barbells and ropes of sufficient strength to hold them should be used to secure awnings. Make sure the edges of displays are not sharp or splintery. Check that nothing will snag customers clothing or skin. Make sure any items that might be unsafe for children to handle can't be grabbed easily by them.

You can find items from which to build your displays at many places, but if you need to be price conscious building them yourself will keep your costs down. Home improvement stores will stock most of what you need to build pleasing displays much more cheaply than you can buy them in most cases. Thrift shops sometimes carry items that would make good displays at affordable prices. Watch for store liquidation sales in your local paper. Very often they will sell some of their display shelving, counters, or tables. Garage sales are even possibilities for inexpensive display materials for your booth.

When thinking about how to display your own items, spend some time browsing other vendor's booths and note how they do it and what they use. Notice what is pleasing to your eye. If it pleases you, it will please others. If it works for them it most likely will work for you. It is not difficult nor expensive to build your own attractive displays. Don't let the lack of a great display stop you from starting your own business, but do keep your mind on how to continually improve your display as your business grows. As your display becomes more organized and appealing to customers your sales will grow, as will the compliments.
